Month of Prayer and Giving Day 12 – Looking for Providences

We’ve been told that he that looks for providences will never lack a providence to look at. Take this little account for example.

Almost a decade ago we were given the opportunity to replant a Grace Baptist church on Cecil Street in North Watford. When we took possession of the chapel there were several boxes of records from the church previously meeting in the chapel. Not knowing what to do with them, I asked David Chapman from the Association of Grace Baptist Churches (South East) for advice. He suggested I contact David Woodruff at the Strict Baptist Historical Society.

When I spoke to David Woodruff he offered to come to Wood Green to collect the records. When he came, he brought his wife, Sarah, along with him. While having a cup of tea with the Woodruffs we told them about the work we were doing at Wood Green, Angel and North Watford. They told us about the need for similar work in a place called Edlesborough.

They gave me the details of a man named David Coleman that I was able to speak to about the situation at Edlesborough. It was with the help of the Colemans and Woodruffs that a monthly afternoon meeting would begin at Edlesborough. Some years later my family and I would move to the village and lead a small group of Christians meeting in the chapel to form a new church.

The growing church at Edlesborough will celebrate its 3rd anniversary on 26 March 2017 with special services at which Brian Edwards will preach. I am now serving as locum pastor at Dunstable Baptist Church where the Woodruffs are members. I am also involved in the church plant from Edlesborough at Leagrave where the Colemans are serving. What wonderful providences.

Will you thank God for His providence in ordering the steps of those who serve Him? Will you ask the Lord to help you be alert to providential opportunities He brings your way? Will you ask the Lord to grant you courage to seize such opportunities for His glory?

Indeed, he that looks for providences will never lack a providence to look at.
