Month of Prayer and Giving Day 15- Developing not Despising

“Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.”
1 Timothy 4:12 ESV

I’ll never forget the first time I took Alister King along with me to a Grace Baptist gathering. ‘I hope you brought something to do,’ he was told. ‘You’ll probably find this all a bit boring.’ What was being discussed at the meeting? The dearth of young men coming forward for ministry.

Thankfully, Alister was not put off by the comments. They may, in some way, have even deepened his resolve from a young age to serve the Lord. Regardless, the comments were out of place.

Now 21 years old, Alister is the church secretary and ministry trainee at Grace Baptist Church in Edlesborough. He also studies part-time via Highland Theological College and serves 25 hours a week as the administrative assistant to the staff of Grace Baptist Partnership. He’s juggling more balls than a circus clown!

But those who know and work with him will testify to the fact he is no clown. He has lived on his own for a year and a half, has adjusted to the strictures of Type 1 diabetes and has made progress in both study and service. Though some might think he lives in his father’s shadow, those in the know realise he is increasingly casting a shadow of his own.

Will you pray that Alister in his zeal to serve the Lord will wait patiently on Him for guidance and direction? Will you pray that he will be able to effectively balance – a balance he would be the first to admit he has not always gotten right! – his various responsibilities? Will you pray that his gifts for ministry will be developed through use in his local church and beyond?

Will you pray that across the churches we will not express our angst over the young people we don’t have but focus our attention on those we do have? We might be pleased to see how God will reward that attention in the years to come.

“Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.”
3 John 8 ESV
