Month of Prayer and Giving Day 23- Spiritual Sons

“You, therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, commit to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”
2 Timothy 2:1-2

By God’s grace over the years I have been able to mentor a number of men into ministry roles in various countries. Though all of them are dear to me, some of them are truly like sons.

When I met up with Sonny Simak last week, though there were other places to go and other things to do, I was in no hurry. It was time to catch up with a son in ministry.

I wanted to know how Sarita was doing. You see, I had performed their wedding ceremony. I wanted to know how the adoption of their son was progressing. You see, that has been a matter of regular prayer ever since Sonny and Sarita shared their plans with us to adopt a child.

I was anxious to hear how things were going at Southall. I used to go there every week and meet with Sonny and Sunny Kundhi in the earliest days of church planting in that spiritually needy part of London. I smiled as he spoke of different encouragements. Had we not been in a public place, I would have wept as he shared some significant challenges.

I enquired about his future plans for life and ministry just as a father would a son. But as I left my meeting with Sonny to spend some time with yet another son, it dawned on me. Sonny is no longer my son. He is my brother.

We are not in a top-down relationship. We are in a side-by-side partnership. We discussed various matters. We didn’t have identical views. That was okay. We do agree on the main things and we share an ever-increasing love for the Lord, the local church and the lost.

Will you pray for my brother, his wife and the son they are adopting? Will you pray for the church in Southall? After a period of blessing they are having some difficulties. It’s often like that, isn’t it? Will you pray that the Lord will give them clear direction for the future as they continue to serve him?

Will you ask the Lord to raise up spiritual sons for Sonny in Southall and beyond?

“Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.”
3 John 8 ESV
